A German 19th-Century brass equinoctial compass sundial and nocturnal,
unsigned, the glazed compass with blued-iron needle and engraved graduations in degrees around the inside edge, folding latitude arm graduated 0°-90°, the hour ring graduated in hours in Roman numerals on the upper face and Arabic numerals on the underside, with folding gnomon, fitted in a brass case, the upper side of the lid with graduations around the edge in degrees in four quadrants, next the days of the houses of the Zodiac, compass directions in German and days of the month, at the centre, two volvelles, the upper one with hours around the edge 1-12 (x2), symbols for the moon's astrological disposition and an index engraved Dorsum Vrsa Mayoris et luna, also with an aperture to read off the phases of the moon on the lower volvelle, graduated around the edge in days 1-29½ and hours 1-12 (x2) with two indexes to read off the surrounding scales, both volvelles pierced in the centre to sight the Pole Star when the lid is opened, the underside of the lid engraved with a table of latitudes of continental cities and towns entitled POLUS HÖHE -- 3¾in. (9.5cm.) diameter
