De Caullery was first recorded in 1593/4 in the records of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as a pupil of Joos de Momper, under the name 'Loys Solleri'. By 1602 he had become a master of that guild and it was in Antwerp that he continued to work for the rest of his life. Influenced by the work of Sebastian Vrancx and Hieronymus Francken I, he is known to have collaborated with Abel Grimmer (see for example the painting in the Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam). The present pictures are very close to his work, both stylistically and iconographically, in addition to sharing typical compositional traits of de Caullery, for example the elliptical arrangement of the main figures.
