The artist was one of the leading figures of the second generation of Dutch Italianate painters. It has therefore been assumed that he travelled to Italy in the 1640s, although no proof for such a trip exists. He was in France in 1650, and had returned to Amsterdam by 1652. The present picture dates from that period, with typically imposing, yet sensitively characterised figures rendered with refined detail, bright colours and an intuitive understanding of the subtleties of light and shade.
