Lot Essay
After the portrait in the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basle (inv. no. 314).
Bonifacius Amerbach was the son of the Basle publisher Johanes Amerbach (1430-1513). Rather than follow in publishing Bonifacius studied the law, later becoming Professor of Law at the lUniversity of Basel. At the University he be-friended Erasum of Rotterdam, so much so that he made him sole heir to his property. Amongst the items left to Erasmus were several works by Hans Holbein the Younger, presumably also the original work the present lot is based upon.
