[SCANDAL]. [ANON.]. The Widow of the Wood. London: Printed for C. Corbett, 1775. [With:] The New Bath Guide: Or, Memoirs of the B--R--D Family. Cambridge, 1768. Frontispiece. (One leaf torn.) 12o. Early 19th-century marbled boards, rebacked. (Half-title present). The first title, if the booksellers' entries on the pastedown and flyleaf are creditable, is excessively rare. The Widow... details the many marriages and affairs of a maiden Northey and involves the Wolseley and Robins families in Staffordshire. Her fourth husband, Mr. Hargrave, seeking to keep wagging tongues to a minimum, sought out and destroyed every copy of the present title that he could lay hands on, thus the scarcity.
