In 1829 four of his paintings were hung in the annual exhibition of the Norwich Society, after which he was invited to become an honorary member, the following year three of his paintings were accepted and exhibited at the Society of British Artists, London. In 1832 Churchyard moved to London and became a full-time painter and was particularly influenced by Constable and Crome. Like many artists Churchyard did not often sign his work, however shortly before he died in 1865 he wrote the name of each of his seven daughters on the back of several hundred pictures. By the mid 1960's Churchyard was widely acknowledged as one of the great British masters of the 19th Century, the heir to Constable and Crome and an important link between them and Wilson Steer.
