Lot Essay

Stoker Petty Officer John Honey was born in Liskeard, Cornwall in December 1871 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in March 1891. Joining the Ship's Company of H.M.S. Raleigh in October of the same year, he went on to serve in the Gambia operations of 1894. Pensioned ashore as a Stoker Petty Officer in March 1913, Honey was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in the following year and joined the Ship's Company of the Battleship Benbow. Subsequently present at the Battle of Jutland, he removed to the Dreel Castle in April 1917 and was still with her at the end of the War. He was finally discharged in late 1918, having received his L.S. and G.C. Medal back in September of the previous year.
