2nd Lieutenant Jasper Carew was born at South Brent, Devon in June 1894 and was educated at Blundell's School and the R.M.A. Sandhurst. Posted to the 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment in February 1914, he joined the B.E.F. in the following August and was killed in action leading his Platoon near Hazebrouck on 14.10.1914. Writing home to his parents, Carew's C.O. referred to his gallantry and leadership and to the fact that he was 'absolutely fearless'.
