Lance-Corporal W. Beauchamp, who was from Downton, Salisbury and latterly a Sergeant, first saw action with the Royal Marine Brigade in France in late 1914. Subsequently posted to the Porstmouth Battalion, Royal Naval Division, he was killed in action in Gallipoli on 6.5.1915:
'The period 4-8 May [1915] was a time of re-organizing trenches after the fighting of the previous week. Casualties still occurred daily. On 6 May, Major H. Armstrong, C.O. of 'B' Company, Portsmouth Battalion, was killed in action. Also on that date Captain A.E. Syson, C.O. of 'C' Company, suffered wounds in action. Sergeant W. Beauchamp was also killed in action during the above exchange with the Turks'.
