4o (206 x 147 mm). Titles printed in red and black, some chapter headings printed in red, 14 (of 16) full-page woodcut illustrations and final leaf with woodcut device. (Without title and dedication to the Pauline Epistles [Aa*, Aa**], title and dedication to Acts [aa] and title and dedication to the Catholic Epistles [AA], adhesion/tear on Pp4 with loss of a few words, occasional pale spotting.)
Binding: contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin over reverse-bevelled wooden boards, sides divided into panels by wide double fillets, roll-tooled historiated borders (one signed HR), date "1564" and initials "MWS" stamped on front cover, two brass clasps (two nails missing from clasps, some light wear). Provenance: Franciscus Wishmaar (early signature on title) -- annotations and marginalia in several early Latin hands -- "Andr. Christ. HWud emi vindobone" (inscription dated 3 January 1779 on title) -- [with B.H. Blackwell's, Oxford (label on front pastedown)] -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 19 June 1942) -- donated to SMS 27 July 1942.
FIRST EDITION, variant B (second issue), with the armorial device and printer's warning on the verso of the title. According to Darlow and Moule, "It has been suggested that var. A represents the class of copies which got into circulation at an early date -- whether presentation copies... or those dispersed by Moses' sale of his stock -- and that var. B represents the bulk of the edition which was reserved and not actually published until 1562." Regarding the leaves here lacking, they note, "Nearly all copies lack the preliminary leaves in pts. 2, 3 and 4 [some of which contain woodcuts], including the dedication addressed to the three sons of Ferdinand I." The Syriac type used for this edition was prepared by Guillaume Postel after the handwriting of Moses of Mardid, the assistant to J.M. Widmanstädt. Adams B1797; Darlow & Moule 8947-48.
