Original purple blind-stamped cloth (spine toned, some light staining to covers, light wear at extremities). Provenance: Frederick W. Skiff (bookplate) -- Estelle Doheny (paper bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Most of the stories, including Melville's diminutive masterpieces "Bartleby" and "Benito Cereno," had originally appeared in Putnam's Monthly Magazine. BAL 13669.
