Lot Essay

This pair of armchairs relates to one pair and a single armchair that were formerly in the possession of Napoleon, the latter three chairs were made by the cabinet maker George Bullock (d. 1818) as part of the furnishings supplied for the library at Longwood, St Helena, by the British Government. Chairs of this model were included in designs for the library at New Longwood House and Helena (Lowe papers, Folio 220).
