The image of the horseman or hunter chasing stags is well known in Boston mid-18th century needlework. Several pictures in which the figure appears, more as a supporting character than protagonist, include Mary Pickering's chimneypiece and an anonymously wrought picture (see Ring, Girlhood Embroidery Vol. I (New York, 1993), p. 47, figs. 44 and 45).
