Lot Essay

Franz F. Ziegler (c. 1870-1934) was one of Gorham's best-known sculptors who made models for silver and bronze, and represented Gorham at the Paris Exposition in 1900. Born in Germany, Ziegler emigrated to the United States in 1892. He trained with New York sculptor Karl Bittner and joined Gorham around 1896, remaining with the company for over thirty years. The design drawing and the costing slip, dating to 1910, indicate that Ziegler spent four days modeling the base of this bowl.
