A RARE SHIPPING PLATE
Circa 1730
Enamelled in an early famille rose palette with three Dutch ships under full sail on a green sea, an inscription beneath them reading GLUCKIG ARIVEMENT (joyous arrival or happy homecoming), the rim with flowering boughs and dragon roundels enclosed by green and yellow borders

Lot Essay

This rare subject of treasure-laden merchantmen returning to home port, so emblematic of the China trade, is found in the Mottahedeh collection (Howard & Ayers, op. cit., p. 198) and the Hodroff collection (D.S. Howard, op. cit., p. 66) where the author notes that "Few examples are known and there was probably only one small consignment of plates, undoubtedly ordered specially"
