Provenance

Given by the artist as a Christmas card in 1897 to William Thetford, Norwich and then by descent to the present owner.

Lot Essay

Munnings was in the habit of giving out hand-made Christmas cards to friends and family. He gave this card to William Thetford, a friend and fellow pupil at the Norwich School of Art who would accompany Munnings on sketching trips into the countryside. Painted when he was still only 19, the card shows not only Munnings's precosity but also his love of horses from an early age.
