Lot Essay

Made for James Brydges, advanced to the Dukedom in 1719 and known as 'Princely Chandos'. J. Goldsmith-Phillips, China-Trade Porcelain, p. 84 calls him "one of the notable personalities of 18th century England" and "a splendid figure". He describes the Duke's sumptuous entertaining of such guests as Alexander Pope and Handel at Canons, the great London house for which this service was made. D.S. Howard, op. cit., pp. 115 and 181 cites pieces in the Bullivant, Tudor-Craig, Crisp and Quennell collections
