Lot Essay

The inscription 'Poort van Cleef' refers to the Hotel 'Die Port van Cleve', where the artist stayed in Enkhuizen in 1911, according to a letter which he sent to G.H. Breitner (see A. de Jong, Willem Bastiaan Tholen 1860-1931, 1993, p. 164).

One of the drawings in the present lot is a study for the painting 'Lantaarnlicht', illustrated in R. Bakels, W.B. Tholen, 1930, fig. 102.
