Lot Essay

The preoccupation with death that is so powerful in much of Damien Hirst's work was suddenly interspersed with the 'Beautiful' Spin Paintings beginning in 1995. Inspired from memories of the long running British children's television programme 'Blue Peter', Hirst created amazingly colourful, random and beautiful works. The simple technique of pouring gloss household paint onto a canvas that is spinning on a potter's wheel was introduced by the artist because he "was annoyed by people asking which way up they [his paintings] were meant to be." (D. Hirst, 'I want to spend the rest of my life everywhere, with everyone, one to one, always, forever, now', London 1997, p. 259.)
