Lot Essay

The attribution to Turchi was first proposed by Dr. D. Stephen Pepper, who suggested a dating for the present work to around 1630, noting the influence of Domenichino on the artist at this time (private communication, April 2000). We are grateful to Dr. Erich Schleier for confirming the attribution (letter, 2 November 2000).
