Lot Essay

According to Warder Cadbury, the present work was a momento from a Sketch Club meeting. The recipient, Charles B. Burkhardt had translated and edited the book, Fairy Tales and Legends of Many Nations, which in turn had been illustrated by James H. Cafferty. Cafferty was a fellow member of the Sketch Club and long time friend of Tait. Ready to Fire was derived from an earlier painting by Tait executed in 1854 (cf. W.H. Cadbury, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, Artist in the Adirondacks, Newark, Delaware, 1986, p. 129, no. 54.26, illustrated).
