Lot Essay
The Godolphin House, a Tudor estate in Cornwall, England, was purchased by the artist's son, Sydney, in 1937 and was later occupied by the artist and his wife. Schofield drew inspiration from the landscape in and around the Godolphin House, and the lily pond in particular was the subject of several works painted between 1939 and 1940. A letter dated 8 May 2000 from the artist's grandson discussing the work accompanies the lot.
