Lot Essay

With its distinctive swept apron, bombé form and concave frieze drawer, this commode is characteristic of Lombard craftmanship. Related commodes include that illustrated in G. Rosa, I Mobili nelle Civiche Raccolte Artistiche di Milano, Milan, 1963, p.95, no.244, another illustrated in C. Alberici, Il Mobile Lombardo, Milan, 1969, p.104 and that sold by Donna Marcella Traballesi, Palazzo della Stuffa, Florence, Christie's House sale, 3-4 Ocotber 1995, lot 168 (146,133,000 L.). A very similar commode was recently sold in these rooms 29-30 March 2001, lot 261 ($37,600).

A further example attributed to the workshop of Giuseppe Maggiolini, but with more elaborate marquetry, is discussed in S. Colombo, L'Arte del Legno e dl Mobile in Italia, 1981, no.473.
