Lot Essay

200,000 Cubic Feet Package is a preparatory work for Christo and Jeanne-Claude's large-scale project for the 1967-68 Documenta IV, the international exhibition of contemporary art held periodically in Kassel, Germany. Reaching 280 feet into the air, the inflated and roped balloon evokes a tower, obelisk and an enormous wrapped phallus. The sculpture was the largest inflated object (without an interior skeleton) ever erected.

Daniel Varenne has assigned this work archive number 1200 and will include this work in his forthcoming Christo catalogue raisonné.
