Lot Essay

The LUCIA A. SIMPSON was a Great Lakes Lumber Schooner, was typical of ships of her time and had the distinction to be one of the last of the lumber schooners to sail on Lake Michigan. She was built in 1875 by Rand and Burger of Manitowac, Wisconsin. She measured 127 feet on deck and had a beam of 28 feet. After surviving a gale in 1929 off Algoma on Lake Michigan she was towed to Sturgeon Bay for repairs. It was there that she ended her career when a fire swept through the shipyard destroying her.
