Lot Essay

The clock is a copy of the celebrated model made circa 1785 and attributed to Jean-Henri Riesener, now in the Louvre (cat. C.Dr., No 185). The companion barometer, also in the Louvre, is a 1860s version made by the 19th century cabinetmaker Grohé. Both are illustrated in Pierre Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Picard, 1999, pp. 116 and 384.
