A FRENCH ORMOLU CARTEL CLOCK
Of Louis XV style, 19th Century
The white enamel Roman and Arabic dial with pierced ormolu hands, signed 'GUDIN A PARIS', with strike/silent lever by XII, in an asymmetric cartouche-shaped case cast with rocaille, foliage and putti rising to a figure of the goddess Diana with her hound, the ormolu bearing the spurious stamp 'S. GERMAIN', the twin barrel movement with silk suspension and countwheel strike on bell, with repeat signature to the back plate, regilt

Lot Essay

There are various versions of this cartel clock in existence, the positioning of the putti being the most recognisable variation, some earlier and simpler versions lacking the putti completely.
