AN AUSTRIAN GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH MINIATURES
by Anton Dudeum (fl. 1798-1824), marked, Vienna, circa 1800, with the Viennese second standard mark for 13-carat gold, later struck with two French import marks for gold 1864-1893, two of the miniatures bearing signature 'Sauvage', the enamel miniature circa 1775
Octagonal box, the cover, sides, cut corners and base inset with miniatures under glass painted with putti playing with garlands and at altars of love en grisaille on a dark blue ground, the cover applied with an oval enamel portrait miniature of a lady in white dress, fur bordered blue surcoat, pearl necklace and drop pearl earrings, pearls, black feather and blue flowers in her upswept fair hair, within gold mount, the base with central oval panel enclosing pierced gold monogram 'AVJ' on blue silk ground, the eight side dividers stamped with husks on a matted gold ground
