Lot Essay

At the age of 16, Jean-Etienne de Paris was apprenticed to the celebrated gold box maker Daniel Gouers (see lot 911). He was also sponsored by Gouers when he attained the maîtrise on 24 April 1736. The original design of the present box witnesses the influence of Gouers on his apprentice.
