A GEORGE I GOLD AND TORTOISESHELL PIQUÉ SNUFF-BOX
circa 1720
Flattened rectangular gold box with narrow sides, the hinged cover and base inset à jour with slightly convex semi-translucent blonde tortoiseshell panels inlaid in gold piqué posé with Ceres in her chariot drawn by a Sphynx, a bird and a gnat hovering, the base similarly inlaid with a bird and a dog, the matted gold mounts and sides chased with strapwork, reeded rims and slightly flaring engraved thumbpiece
