by Pierre-François Drais (fl. 1763-1788), indistinctly marked Paris, 1780/1781, with the first charge and discharge marks of Henry Clavel 1780-1782, with the second discharge mark of Henry Clavel 1782-1789, with the counter-mark of Jean-François Kalendrin 1789-1792, with the restricted warranty mark and 'récense' mark for gold, Paris 1798-1809, the 'petite récense' mark for gold, Paris 1809-1819, later struck with two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold
Octagonal box, the cover, sides, corners and base inset with semi-translucent beige parcel-striated slightly convex agate panels, the almost symmetrically striated panels on the lid shaped as the wings of a stylized butterfly with body of raised striated agate, within fluted gold mounts, the raised borders chased in two-colour gold with stylized acanthus alternating with concave pellets on a matted ground, the side pilasters chased as fluted columns and hung with husks, the lower borders of the side walls chased with a wavescroll band
