Cecil John Rhodes wanted to open the route for a railway line to the north and the two republics were causing a problem. The whole operation was achieved without a shot being fired and the two republics were incorporated under the title Bitish Bechuanaland on 30 Sepember 1885 Miltary Telegraphs
