Lot Essay
During the early part of his career Aublet was a student of Jacquand and Jean-Léon Gérôme. The present work displays the artist's move away from such Salon influences towards a greater freedom of expression in terms of form and colour. Painted in 1890, four years after the last Impressionist Exhibition, Aublet had clearly adopted much of the Impressionist style, in particular his handling of light and the almost sfumato treatment of the figures.
