Lot Essay

The Faun with Clappers was first recorded in a book on Roman costume by Albert Rubens and published in 1665. At that stage the work was in the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence. By 1688 though it was recorded as being in the collection of the Tribuna of the Uffizi, and it remains there to this day.
