Yangshao culture, Southern Shaanxi province, Banpo type, circa 4800-3600 BC
The ovoid body tapering to a small flat base and decorated around the upper body with a wide band of deeply scored diagonal lines, applied at mid-body with a pair of loop handles, the neck surmounted by a tall, curved mouth

Tokyo, 1991, no. 2; one from the Honolulu Academy of Arts in the exhibition, Origins of Chinese Ceramics, China Institute, New York, 25 October 1978 - 28 January 1979, no. 1; and another in the British Museum, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, Tokyo, 1981, vol. 5, pl. 1.
