A RARE SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY DISH
Tang dynasty (618-907)
Of shallow form with everted sides, decorated in the center with deep green dots on a chestnut ground to suggest 'snake stone' steatite, the sides with white dots on green, the reverse with a green-streaked straw glaze falling short of the flat base to reveal the pale buff ware

Lot Essay

The tie-dye effect in the center of this dish is quite unusual in sancai wares, and was produced by covering reserved white dots with additional color.

Only one other dish of this very rare type appears to have been published. See C. Deydier, Arts de la Chine et de l'Himalaya, Paris, 21 February-29 March, 1997, no. 6.
