Lot Essay

The four-character inscription may be translated: 'Small Fragrances of Spring and Autumn.'

Although typical of the multi-colored overlays of the Li Jungting school, this is a more impressive and better carved example, suggesting the hand of the master, Li Junting himself.

For another Li Junting multi-colored overlay bottle still in the Imperial Collection, see Masterpieces of Snuff Bottles in the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1995, p. 106, no. 99.
