Yao Mendong is one of the group of carvers who emerged during the Daoguang period as individual artists, signing their art, which included the pre-eminent Chen Guozhi, and the better known, but more commercial carver Wang Bingrong. Yao's works are among the rarest of this seminal group of carvers.
