Details
JOAN BLAEU (1596-1673)

Toonneel der steden van de vereenighde Nederlanden met hare beschrijvingen. [Amsterdam: ?1651]. 2 volumes, 2° (525 x 340mm). Text in Dutch. Engraved armorial titles with pasted letterpress overslips, the borders decorated with the arms of the seven provinces. Both volumes with the additional privileges in French by Louis XIV. 294 engraved maps, plans and views, including 174 double-page plates and 1 folding, 20 single-page, the remaining quarter-page or text engravings, woodcut initials and tailpieces, mounted on guards throughout. (Occasional light browning or spotting, a few short marginal tears, some repaired, volume I with some light marginal damp-staining just touching the corners of 9 plates, inserted smaller bifolium (map Currus Veliferi), repaired tear to title overslip, and minor marginal worming occasionally touching plates or text, volume II lacking ixE Huyum Vulgo Huy.) Contemporary Dutch vellum panelled in gilt with central foliate lozenge (ties lacking, some light staining, volume I with cockling to vellum of upper board).

THE FIRST DUTCH EDITION of Blaeu's townbooks of the Netherlands. The plates conform to those of the first issue of 1649, whilst the privileges accord with a variant issue, Koeman Bl 68 B and Bl 69 B. Some small changes in the text, made in order to include events up to 1651, suggest that this edition was issued in or soon after 1651 (cf. Koeman Bl 70). Blaeu's atlas, 'held in the highest esteem in the Netherlands' was in production during the war for independence between the United Provinces of the Netherlands and Spain. The division of the maps between the two volumes reflects the changing status of individual towns and fortifications in the final years of the war and the recognition of Dutch Independence by Spain in 1648.
