NAPOLEON I (1769-1821)
Postes Imperiales: Etat général des postes et relais de l'Empire Français ... pour l'an 1809. Paris: Imprimerie Impériale, 1809. 8° (194 x 120mm). Folding hand-coloured engraved map by 'P.F. Tardieu' after J.J. Pachoux, with inset map of Paris and its environs and title cartouche surmounted by Napoleon's arms. (Skilfully-repaired short tear touching border of map.) Contemporary straight-grained crimson morocco gilt, covers with gilt-stamped arms of Napoleon I [cf. Olivier 2652 fer 6] enclosed by a dentelle border, flat spine in compartments, lettered and dated in gilt, and decorated with bee and star tools, gilt palmette turn-ins, blue watered-silk liners, gilt edges, blue silk marker (small ink stain on upper cover, slight rubbing to covers, light scuff marks at head of spine).
A FRESH COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING BEARING NAPOLEON'S ARMS. The 'Carte des Routes de Postes de l'Empire Français' shows the postal routes throughout the 113 'Départemens' of France and north-eastern Italy. Although Pierre François Tardieu (1711-1771) is named as the engraver, the map is probably the work of his successor Pierre Antoine Tardieu (b. circa 1784), who engraved the 1812 and 1814 editions of the 'Carte des Routes de Poste de l'Empire de France' (cf. BM Catalogue of Printed Maps, Charts and Plans (London: 1967), XIV, col.67).
The design of this armorial varies from Olivier's example in having fewer bolts of lightning at the feet of the eagle, the form of the ribbons and the field of the imperial flag.
