A Schwarzwald tole peinte figural timepiece
Mid 19th Century
Shaped as a travelling salesman carrying a clock on his back and chest, the clock to his chest with a white enamelled dial with a Roman chapter ring, the centre decorated with cattle and a farmhouse beyond, the movement with silk-suspended pendulum, on rounded rectangular wooden plinth base, re-decorated, the hour hand missing
37.5 cm. (14¾ in.) high overall

Lot Essay

Clock making was a cottage industry in the Schwarzwald region of Germany. According to Prof. K. Sluyterman clockmakers such as these travelled as far as the Netherlands to sell their wares.
