Lot Essay

Dr. Ulrike Middendorf included this painting in her 1989 catalogue raisonné of the works of Hendrick Dubbels (loc. cit.). On the basis of a poor quality photograph, she included the work as 'attributed to Dubbels', noting that the composition was typical within the context of Dubbels' oeuvre. Certainly it is comparable with works such as the Evening river landscape in the Museum Hoofje Van Aerden, Leerdam, datable to circa 1660. More recently the picture was sold at Phillips, London, as by Jan Vermeer van Haarlem.
