Lot Essay

This drawing will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the oeuvre of Louis-Léopold Boilly, currently being prepared by Etienne Bréton and Pascal Zuber.
A study for Boilly's La Queue au Lait, exhibited at the Salon of 1796, H. Harrisse, Louis-Léopold Boilly, Peintre, Dessinateur et Lithographe. Sa vie et son oeuvre 1761-1848, Paris, 1898, no. 10. Boilly also used this composition for a canvas painted en grisaille sold at Parke Bernet, New York, 6 December 1958, lot 97. The composition was recorded in a print by Noël entitled La Laitière, H. Harrisse, op. cit., under no. 1214. Two other drawings, in pen and ink, are also known, H. Harrisse, op. cit., under nos. 1138 and 1139.
