Lot Essay

This arrangement of figures, with alterations associated with the shift of focus to a male figure added to the left of the composition, was used by Bol for the right hand side of his picture of The artist and his family in Dordrecht, A. Blankert, op. cit., no. A34. The handling of the present sheet owes much to Flinck, an influence that may reflect the two artists' cooperation in life-drawing groups, as noted by Professor Sumowski, op. cit. under no. 119.
