Lot Essay

The figure appears in the foreground of Adriaen van de Velde's Italianate landscape with peasants and cattle also in the Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann Collection, lot 549 of the present sale. The attribution of the present drawing to van de Velde was confirmed by Bill Robinson in 1991. He compared the sheet to a study of a boy playing a flute, sold anonymously, P. Brandt, Amsterdam, 17-18 November 1959, lot 101.
