Lot Essay

Bound until 1974 in two early 19th Century dark blue morocco albums with interleaving pages watermarked 1807. These albums were stamped 'Latham's Bird's. Vol. XI [the second 'XII'] Drawings.', implying a relationship with Latham's General History of Birds published in ten volumes in 1821-24. The arrangement and classification of the drawings indicated with pencil inscriptions may however relate to Lewin's seven volume The Birds of Great Britain, with their Eggs, published in 1789-94.
