JOE SMITH Joseph Smith, an inside-left and great Bolton Wanderers servant was born in Dudley Ports, Staffordshire on 25 June 1889. After spells in Sunday Schools Leagues he joined Bolton Wanderers in May 1908 and so began his 19 years service with the club. Smith had an affinity with the F.A.Cup both as a player and a manager he had the great honour and achievement of captaining the first-ever F.A.Cup-winning side at Wembley in 1923 were his Bolton Wanderers side defeated West Ham United 2-0 and again took them to a 1-0 victory in the 1926 final against Manchester City. On leaving the club in 1927 he had made a total of 450 league apperances and scored an incredible 254 goals, brief spells with Darwen, Manchester Central and Hyde United followed before becoming Reading Manager in July 1931. His affair with the F.A.Cup continued when he went on to manage Blackpool Football Club in 1935 and under his guidance took the club to three finals in the late 1940s-early 1950s culminating in arguable the greatest-ever final to grace the Twin Towers the 1953 match against his old side Bolton Wanderers, with the match ending in a 4-3 for Blackpool.
