A GEORGE III PARTRIDGE WOOD CROSSBANDED AND SPECIMEN WOOD PARQUETRY GAMES TABLE
Crossbanded and inlaid with lines, with a hinged parquetry top inlaid with various lozenge veneers including burr yewwood, satinwood, coromandel, rosewood concealing a panel inlaid to one side for chess, and painted to the reverse with the 'Game of the Jew' enclosing a later leather lined frieze compartment for backgammon, on square tapered legs joined by cross stretchers, with boxwood and ivory chess pieces, (incomplete) and counters for drafts

Lot Essay

With similarities to a games table in one of the state rooms at Woburn.
The Game of the Jew was popular in the late 18th century until circa 1830. It is played with a pair of dice by any number of players.
A similar games table was sold at Phillip's New Bond Street on 21st April 1998, lot 32.
