A SILVER-GILT CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL AND EN-PLEIN CASKET
marked Khlebnikov with Imperial warrant, Moscow, 1908-1917
Oblong, on slightly spreading base with triangular enamel decorations, the sides with panels illustrating a styilized walled Kremlin between scrolls and beneath an arch of stylized flowers on dark blue ground between columns of stylized flowerheads and geometric motifs incorporating an oblong green stone, the ends with swing arc handles similarly decorated, the hinged cover with sloping sides embellished with stylized flowerheads and leaves with geometric motifs at intervals between decorated wavy borders, the centre set with an en-plein plaque depicting 'Zaporozhye Cossacks Writing a mocking Letter to the Turkish Sultan' after Il'ia Repin, marked inside cover and under base

Lot Essay

Here depicted is one of the most famous paintings by Il'ia Efimovich Repin (1844-1930) which was painted between 1880 and 1891, which was bought by Pavel Tret'iakov and remains in his gallery in Moscow. It proved a very popular subject with enamellers; for another example see Christie's London, 15 July 1998, lot 192.
