Lot Essay

The Stavka was the name given to the russian General Headquarters during the First World War.
Headed by Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich at the beginning of the war, Tsar Nicholas II appointed himself Supreme Commander in August 1915.
The photographs appear to have been taken after this date and show the Tsar and his son, the Tsarevich Aleksei attending military functions.
The original photographs give a rare insight into the Tsar's schedule during the war, such as his decorating cossacks of His Personal Escort (Konvoy) or meeting with his generals such as General Alekseev, Kuropatkin and Evert.
